I don't think it is real common, but I can't see any reason it won't 
work.  You would put RC networks
across the windings to damp out the specific frequency band of the 
resonance.  If you wanted to
get really fancy, you could even use a parallel LC element with a series 
resistor to tune it to the
resonant frequency.  Being an electrical guy, whipping up an electrical 
version of a viscous damper
would be my first choice, but I have to admit I have never tried it.
