So, can I infer from all this that what the PCI documents refer to as 
bus enumeration  has at the heart of our difficulties rather than any of 
the obscure and evil stuff I conjectured last night?

That would be nice, and would be in keeping with the fact that these 
cards do seem to work on different motherboards when controlled by MS 
Windows, which is aided by the information provided by their vendors in 
their driver .inf files.

Thanks for nailing down the SIIG card, Jon. I've got one reserved for 
pickup tomorrow. It isn't an absolute necessity for me, but I like to 
protect the extra measure of protection against screw-ups with I/O to 
the motherboard from real-world equipment.
