Using the safety ground as a path for the return
current instead of using a neutral is not safe
because, if the connection between the machine
and the safety ground should be loose or fail,
then the entire frame of the machine will become
electrically hot with respect to the naturally
occuring grounded objects nearby.

It is also a violation of electrical code and
will result in failed safety inspections and
rejection of insurance claims if problems are
traced to using safety ground as a neutral
substitute.
