Tony, On my Sherline I like to use endmill holders, as opposed to collets, so I can measure all of my tool lengths away from the machine. Then I use a dial indicator as a master tool. Mine is 3.6000 inches long so when I set up my G54 work offset that is the number I enter into the pop up dialog for touching off the Z axis. This must be done with NO tool active.
What this does is aligns the gauge line, which is that flat area at the end of the threads on a Sherline spindle, with the part surface. Then any tool in your tool table (with a positive length) that has G43 applied can be used without touching off. Look out for a future issue of Digital Machinist magazine that will cover Sherline tool presetting in greater detail. I was surprised at how nice it came out. One issue came up, however, during the drilling phase. When EMC2 paused for the tool changes, I didn't see a way to touch off the Z axis after installing a new drill bit. Is there a way to use "touch off" while the tool change dialog box is being displayed?
