I see that Jon, after I made like a dummy and posted.  I had visions of the 
linear motor being treated much like a micro stepping stepper system. one 
with a truly linear, infinite number of 'steps'.  But the bldc component 
would seem to plug into the controls with a more rigid coupling than the 
feedback-less stepper.
