John Kasunich made some improments to the bldc component at the fest,
which made a significant improvement to his motor performance (half
the current and twice the speed) by setting the phase angle to half
way between "now" and "next" angles.
I thought the changes had been pushed, but I can't see them in the git log.

In the meantime, you could experiment with changing the lead angle
manually (at a fixed speed) to see what happens. Unfortunately the
exact angle (try 90 to 95 degrees) is only right for one particular
speed.
