My guess is that you must remove the end bell and the bad bearing without
taking the armature out of the field. If when you take out the bolts, and
pull the end bell by pushing on the motor shaft, the bearing will either
stay in the end bell, or on the shaft. From there it should be obvious how
to replace the bearing as long as the armature is not withdrawn from the
field. Once the end bell and fresh bearing are put back together, don't
forget to exercise it liberally with a dead blow hammer in order to
properly reseat the bearing. I don't know, and cannot imagine why the
armature can't be allowed to touch the magnets as long as its not spun when
its touching, which could cut through the varnish on the laminations,
possibly creating inter-laminate shorts which would then cause more
localized heat from eddy currant losses in the motor. Perhaps one could
find some thin, fairly hard plastic that could be cut into strips and
inserted from the far end bell, if it has vent holes, (rare in my
experience) which would then serve as cushions to prevent the contact. I'd
have to play it by ear on that.

Cheers, Gene
