Thanks for the recommendations. I probably has tried that in thrashing
around but carefully trying it didn't make and difference. 

I finally realized in my dumbhead fashion that qcad was not loaded. I've
tried it from time to  time but it just wasn't my style. 

So.. downloaded and installed qcad. 
Carefully adjusted the font path to the install and tried again. No
joy. 
Then moved a couple of fonts to my home directory and changed the path
in engrave. Still no joy. 

By the way: IRRC the text is supposed to show up in the four quadrant
window to the left of "fill in the variables area". It doesn't. 

Interestingly enough there was no error messages I saw for the missing
font directory. ;-)

Where do I go from here. 

Just call me 'wandering in the wilderness'. ;-)
