Yes, when the backlash is taken up, it will cause a jolt as the motor 
suddenly has to accelerate the table from zero to whatever the current 
velocity is, and that will cause a discontinuity in the motion.

I did a rather crummy retrofit of a 1938 Bridgeport manual mill with 
axis drives meant for a much smaller load.  It works surprisingly well, 
though, and I can fairly easily turn out parts good to +/- 0.001" 
without great effort.
