I think I'd be more inclined to try the same laser that does the wood carving, with the work area sealed off & flooded with dry nitrogen. No oxygen, no fire. And I'd expect a sharper cut. It wouldn't be as fast as the water jet if the OP has a boat load of them to do though. Otoh, whats cut out might be salvageable for another project in the print shop. I would not allow air back into the cut for at least 30 seconds after the laser has fired the last time as the edges may remain hot enough to self-ignite when oxygen is allowed back into the work box.
