Radio Shack's problem has been that they lost any clue about electronics
hobbyists, experimenters, inventors etc. They changed focus more to toys and
consumer electronics, starting around the time they got into computers. Also,
their prices were sky high on most things and they hung onto some really old
stuff, I'd swear every RS I've ever been in had some stock left from the
store's opening day, some going back to the 1960's.
The customer base has changed. Most people don't scratch build entire circuits
from discrete components and some TTL chips anymore. RS did dip a toe into the
Arduino and (IIRC) Raspberry Pi field, but their prices were flat out insane
and they didn't carry a wide range of accessories for them.
One MASSIVE error RS made was changing their line of project boxes without
changing their line of prototype PCBs to match the new boxes. The PCBs had been
designed to match the mounting holes and slots in the original boxes, and both
had been produced for decades without much change. They'd add new boards as
package styles changed, such as from ICs in round TO cans with pins in a
circle* to DIP/DIL style, but the boxes remained the same and the boards fit
them.
Then POOF, a whole new line of project boxes, into which none of the boards
could be mounted without kludgy adaptation, and when that was brought to the
attention of RS corporate *they did nothing to fix the problem*. If the old
boxes were no longer available, then the whole PCB line needed updated to fit
the new boxes - which should have been done simultaneously with the intro of
new boxes.

*Could still find a TO package IC PCB on the racks of most older RS stores
still around in the early 21st century, just in case you needed to do something
with a 35 year obsolete IC.

Just a couple days ago RS was preparing to file for bankruptcy *AGAIN*.
They need to give up.
