I had an ancient (1938) Bridgeport round-ram mill with an M head. It
had bad wear on the spline and rattled horribly under load. I figured
what was happening was the top of the spindle was twisting a bit when
the end mill tooth dug in and then when the tooth came out of the cut,
the released spring would cause it to jump ahead. So, I made some
shims out of brass shim stock and put them into the space on the
UN-DRIVEN side of the spline to fill up the slack there. These were
just 1/8" wide strips of the shim stock, long enough to pass all the
way through the driving spline of the pulley and then bent over at the
ends to keep them from working out of the pulley as the quill moved up
and down. This hack worked marvelously to quiet the racket.

Chuckle, BTDT in similar stuff but its not a "hack" if it works Jon. Its
just repair parts. You be amazed at the 53 dodge od transmission behind
a 52 Chrysler hemi head, which had a habit of eating its gears so I
wound up with 1936 gears in that 53 box, with a fender washer centering
the cluster gear. they'd switched the tooth count for 2nd gear, and the
old gears put 2nd exactly in the center of the hole between low and
high. With the older gearset it it, when the light turned green I had a
6 speed road ranger sound as I was leaving. With the od, it was 30 mph
per thou on the tach, WOT the length of SD was 3300 revs, 99 mph, 21
mpg. The carb wasn't stock either. Never got a speeding ticket or a
mufler too noisy cite. 125k miles with a straight pipe when I parked it
the last time. Fun times, the later 50's & 60's..
