That sounds very familiar to something trying to do a network hostname
lookup/verify and/or connect that will eventually fail before continuing.
It often happens in isolated networks, where no DNS (or internet) is
available. If that is the case, then these delays probably go away when
you manually enter the hosts' IP addresses and names in the /etc/hosts
file. If there are programs trying to connect to the outside world in an
isolated network, then you'd want to use dnsmasq to sink all DNS queries
to 127.0.0.1, except those for your local hosts.
