lookup/verify and/or connect that will eventually fail before continuing.

The hosts file IS the local dns here. its all there. about 25 entries
with all the aliases, any dns requests not in the hosts file are fwded
to the server at my isp. resolv.conf sets hosts first, then nameserver.

So you have internet access for all the computers. If the DNS works,
which I assume, then there still may be a failing connection waiting for
timeouts.
I run xfce4 myself and have never seen delays like you mention.
You mention "opening a file I own"... What program do you use to open
that file? Maybe that program causes the delay. And, additionally, if
the file is not local but on the network, many more things could go
wrong and cause delays.
