Hey guys
Just wondering what the developers think about adding native cam to the
default linuxcnc iso.
I have been having a look on you tube at it and it just looks so good for
quick stuff.
Where I've not found it stable enough to be usable. I personally have it
on a couple of my machines but have never used it w/o broken tooling.
Especially for a lathe
Where I don't have it. my big lathe is run very well by an rpi4b.
I have 5 big machines here running Linuxcnc. All proper machines with
toolchangers and high speed spindles etc.
And we have used several cam softwares over the years.
Starting in fusion 360 and then using bobcam.
And then ecam which is a awesome software and so cheap. Really sweet for
lathes.
I also have a CNC lathe with a fagor controller. And the fagor is really
quick for simple stuff the profile cycle is so fast. Like I can reprogram
a part in a couple of minutes.
Now this has always been one of the biggest limitations to linuxcnc in my
opinion. Over the last 8 years i have been using it.
And native cam has been hanging around for awhile now
I just wanted to see if it could be added to the default iso so we can all
use it easily.
Anyway just a few thoughts.
Cheers andrew
I haven't found writing the gcode I need all that difficult. So a high $
commercial offering has not generated any interest from me. freecad has
a vertical learning curve for me at 90 yo and despite the gent who did
write a gcode generator now being one of the freecad authors, no gcode
translator has been offered. The only cad program I use is used for
additive stuff via one of the 3d printers with the fav a $700 Ender 5
Plus I have around 3 grand in now, is OpenSCAD which is pretty ideal for
additive making. But there I save as a .3mf which gets fed to
prusaslicer or its ilk to make the gcode the printer understands. But
that generates very large files because linuxcnc's looping is unrolled
for these dumb printers. IOW they don't crossbreed in any form. Finding
something that would generate usable gcode is something we need provided
its no harder to learn than OpenSCAD. But I don't see it as a builtin
for linuxcnc. Included on the install cd image for use when needed but
not built in. That might interest me. My 2 cents on the subject.
