I can't find anything at all that somehow relates to some possible text mangling or line wrapping options. Before I assume that Thunderbird is broken, I will try with a new plain config profile. But not today, it's getting late. Thanks, your tips where very helpful.
PS: S/MIME works. In a way that is the more sane approach to crypto anyway.
