There has been a bug in Enigmail 1.5.0 with this problem. I don't know
that Gentoo uses, but I'd assume they never updated to something newer.

You could try to uninstall Enigmail from the Gentoo repository and
just use the latest release version (or the latest nightly build of
Enigmail) from our web site.
