Although I am part of Enigmail's help team, I don't have any say in
Enigmail's future direction -- nor do I want to have a say. :)

What I will say is this: historically, Enigmail has been tightly focused
on supporting OpenPGP via use of GnuPG. That's been one of our
strengths over the years. As soon as we open the door and start
supporting things that are, at present, completely unrelated to OpenPGP,
we lose our focus.

Focus is a very important thing in free software projects. Know what
you're going to do/support/enable and do that thing without getting lost
down the side roads of, "but it would also be nice if...".

It's not necessary that it become official. After all, the HKP
keyserver protocol isn't documented in RFC4880. It's just necessary
that it become a de-facto standard way of querying for keys. If/when it
becomes a de-facto standard, GnuPG will quickly add support for it as a
keyserver protocol, and Enigmail will follow suit.

This is a question that should be addressed to the OpenPGP working
group. :)
