What is the recommendation, then?
Should inline-PGP be used preferably, when sending plain messages
(without attachments) ?

that's for your correspondents to decide, and not something you have
control over there are much better arguments (in both directions) about
whether to use PGP/MIME or inline-PGP than the argument that one or the
other interacts differently with enigmail's "automatically decrypt" setting.

This list has hosted several epic flamewars on the inline-pgp vs
pgp/mime question over the years, it's probably not a great idea to
start another one.

It's not a flame war if you're talking facts, and leave the personal insults out of it. :)

For example, it's a fact that inline signatures work better with a wide variety of software (MTAs, mailing lists, etc.). That's the chief "pro" in terms of using inline.

The chief "con" is that for people who receive the message who are not using PGP it's "ugly" (which is to say that people sometimes do complain about the "weird" stuff that is in your message).

So unfortunately there is no one "right" answer, as dkg pointed out it really depends on who you are corresponding with. Fortunately if that becomes an issue you can set a sensible default, and use per-recipient rules to handle exceptions.

Doug
