Excellent question, and I'm glad you asked!  As it turns out,
Thunderbird has a policy against allowing plugins to use native code
directly.  As an example, we had to remove some of our native-code
libraries that we used for Enigmail -- we had to make Enigmail 100%
Javascript.

Communicating with another process is okay; having a native-code library
is not okay.  And so GPGME is probably not in the cards for us, due to
an engineering decision made by Thunderbird.  :)
