You can - by editing keybindings.cfg.
However, if nautilus is configured to provide a desktop window, it is 
nautilus that "owns" the desktop and there is not a lot e16 can do about 
that. It is nautilus that would have to be configured show e16 menus or 
pass mouse clicks through to the root.

The default keybindings are documented here:

Although this is for 0.16.8.x most of the keybindings are the same in 
0.16.7.x.
You may be confusing area switching with desk switching.
