You can always update to 7.0-STABLE which is what I am running.

would you be willing to run another wm, to aid in the debugging of this?
 Say, twm or something.  Then you could run E inside xnest.

If so I can help walk you through it.  But it would be easiest over IRC.
 So, if interested...
  1) get twm running
  2) install xchat (or whatever you like)
  3) connect to Freenode and join #e.
