Umm, I dunno, it builds just fine on Debian Stable.

https://github.com/mjtorn/e17build is my builder script, it builds it
under /opt/e19/.

But I do feel the pain kludging.

http://sparkylinux.org/ ships e19, but can't do that because:

  * Debian Testing/Unstable - nope!
  * Repository dirlists forbidden - can't see if src packages are there
  * Would have to reinstall and configure a distro that isn't really Debian

There was e18 in between and e20 is in alpha, so I wouldn't go so far
as saying that e19 isn't end-user-friendly. I think my glitches came
from the fact I've been carrying my ~/.e/ around since e17 and automatic
updates for the conf files didn't exist way back.

I guess it's just lack of new packaging.
