Have you ever come acros the "tearoff" popups ? If you click-and-hold on a thumbnail and drag it out of the window, it'll turn into a popup window, which you can size arbitrarily. I use this if I have a couple of previous images I'm comparing new shots too and want them to all be fairly large. Does that fit your use case at all ?
During image review I'm in front of the keyboard, so I can use presentation mode instead. So not really, but how do you remove the popup again ?
That being said, having a special mode for comparing X number of images would be extremely nice.
