Somewhat misleadingly, to use the gphoto manual focus actions your camera needs to be in an autofocus mode. Basically the manual focus steps are simply driving the autofocus motor by a fixed amount. The 'a' key shortcut will do a fully automatic auto-focus operation. gphoto itself will do an autofocus operation when capturing an image in some cases. There has been a bug with this previously because it would override the manual focus a person did. Since gphoto does not let us choose the autofocus point the camera uses, the only point of the focus point rendering is as a center point for positioning your shot.
