Somewhat misleadingly, to use the gphoto manual focus actions
your camera needs to be in an autofocus mode. Basically the
manual focus steps are simply driving the autofocus motor
by a fixed amount.

The 'a' key shortcut will do a fully automatic auto-focus
operation.

gphoto itself will do an autofocus operation when capturing
an image in some cases. There has been a bug with this previously
because it would override the manual focus a person did. I'm not
entirely sure on the state of this now, since it is different per
camera vendor.

Try the 'a' key to autofocus if you want that.

Since gphoto does not let us choose the autofocus point the camera
uses, the only point of the focus point rendering is as a center
point for positioning your shot.
