FWIW -- I've noticed this problem only after upgrading to 4.3 -- no troubles with prior versions. Flip to the Search Log tab while running a compass search and you can see just how slowly the data is being collected -- you can almost increment the numbers in your head. Disable redirection, and the numbers fly by in a blur.
Running on 2008R2 here, so I was going to try the vmware OVA to see if things improved there. In "copious spare time"... sounds like I may just want to open a ticket instead. There are many snmp requests going on if you try to retrieve port information from a switch for many ports. Let's say 480 snmp requests for 10 stats about 48 ports. 480x 1ms = 480 ms to get the information from switches within a LAN. If your client is remote with a round-trip time of 120ms to netsight or netsight to device, that makes 480x 120ms = 57,6 seconds until information is retrieved.
