Thank you Sebastian. I had discounted this because it spoke of the XPI,
and I assumed that because I wasn't working with the XPI that it didn't
apply to me. But a hint from someone else that said the same thing
caused me to look at this again and now everything is fixed.

Instead of unpacking the XPI into a directory named with the ID of the
XPI, in %PROGRAMFILES%, as I have done for years; if instead I rename
the XPI and copy it, without unpacking it, to %PROGRAMFILES%, then
everything works as it should.

(Forget I mentioned ChatZilla and Places Maintenance, I assumed they
were Mozilla add-ons bundled with Firefox but instead they were left
over in my own %APPDATA%. It was so long since I'd dealt with them I'd
forgotten about them, and foolishly wasn't testing with a fresh profile.)
