Interesting, thanks. Having a quick look at one that works when
unpacked, Zotero LibreOffice Integration, yes it does; and one that
doesn't work when unpacked, Zotero, no it doesn't.

whether the extension can be loaded direct from the XPI. In versions
before Gecko 2.0 all extensions were unpacked, in Gecko 2.0 and later

DLLs loaded with ctypes

Why aren't authors communicative about this kind of thing... there's no
mention I can find about this in the former's documentation.
