I'm kind of working on it from the back end, Paul.

I have completed a script that merges the fields of any two contacts,
prompting the user in case of any conflicts. So far, it handles all fields
except the custom ones and a couple of the more obscure fields, but all the
basic address and phone fields are covered. Before I release it, I want to
add as many of the additional fields as I can.

My intention, after that, is to create a shell script that scans (starting
with the selected contact in a list sorted by last name) contacts for
duplicates, in a very broad sense: e.g., same last name and first initial,
or same company name (and no first or last name). It will display the two
names and ask, "Are these duplicates needing to be merged?" I think I'll
have it show a few additional fields, like home city and default E-mail
address. If the user answers yes, it will merge the records by invoking the
first script.

This still does not <delete> duplicates. I don't want to delete them just
yet, because I have imported contacts from both OE and Consultant, and the
"duplicates" sometimes contain information in one that isn't in the other.
(I'm thrilled to be merging it all into a single database of contacts.)
However, once I get this under my belt, with records merged, I probably
<will> want to use what I've learned to create a Delete Duplicates script.
It might not be done before the end of the weekend, however, but I'll keep
you posted.
