I've been annoyed by this "feature" as well. Dan, you say "Like the View
Unread Only option for viewing folders, we leave messages around after you
read them.". But, unlike the "Unread Only" option, the "Unread Messages"
custom view doesn't refresh itself when you leave, and then go back to, the
view. This kinda defeats the purpose of having the custom view. It would be
nice if, when the Custom View is opened, it refreshed itself.

I'm trying to use the following script to open the view, and then refresh
the listing, but apparently "Custom view 'Unread Messages' doesn't
understand the refresh message". Can I refresh it somehow? Also, when I do
the "open custom view..." bit, it really does open it - in a new window. Is
there any way to get it to just display the custom view on the right?

tell application "Microsoft Entourage"
    open custom view "Unread Messages"
    refresh custom view "Unread Messages"
end tell

Thanks,
