First, I have only experienced it once. The residual issues I have experienced have been from my incorrect locating of the effected file since the error message is not very specific. Possibly quite naturally I first looked for a preferences file in the System Folder.
Second, the corruption occurred directly after I had deleted several hundred records due to duplicate records being downloaded from my ISP: US Worst aka Qwest. I deleted the records and then sought to restart Entourage with the Option key to rebuild the database. The error appeared at this point before the rebuild.
Norton Disk Doctor nor Disk First Aid could find any problem. I also used Conflict Catcher’s Scan Files for Damage since it monitors my Preferences folder in the System Folder. All nada.
Since I’ve had several problems with Qwest’s email servers (this wasn’t the first time I’ve experienced the dupes download problem: the other times have been in Outlook 2000 for Windows and Outlook Express 5.02 for Mac) possibly there is something at Qwest causing the problem.
I’m on a DSL connection so I should not be subject to the random static that dial up connections can introduce as file corruptions.
I’ve been slowly but surely immersing myself in the mysterious world of email headers in order to hold Qwest’s feet to the fire on some other issues. Thus I noticed that after I got the Preferences file deleted and thus Entourage returned to the world of the living, I had 6 emails which showed a sent date of 18/01/11 in the Inbox window but a cursory examination of the headers showed correct dates. This “18/01/11” date appeared to be a misread on Entourage’s part since these digits appeared to be from an ID number on the line above the Date Sent line in the header.
Of course I deleted these emails, but upon downloading again the same problem appeared. I then deleted them from the server.
Another odd connection may be to Home.Com which experienced email server problems last week about the time of my Preferences file issue. The Preferences file appears to contain the Accounts information and one server I was routinely checking for email was a Home.Com one.
My Entourage identity was checking four email accounts: 2 at Qwest, 1 at Home.Com and 1 at Mac.Com.
So, too much information?

Hello
I too have experienced the very same problem:
I think my attempts at repairs have increased my problems because I didn’t at first correctly identify the file with the problem. For me it was the Preferences file inside the identity folder of the identity with the error. No other identities had the problem. No preference file in the System folder seemed to be effected.
"The preferences file could not be opened. The end of file was reached."
My experience was that this error occurred without any other similar problems. The only other error my system (iMac DV 400 OS 9.04) has experienced has been mounting a digital camera via USB.
I have four of these Preferences files: 3 within identities folders and one in the general Office 2001 Identities folder. Each file is a different size.
Hope I’ve added something to the discussion.

Has anyone else run into a problem where you get the error message:
"The preferences file could not be opened.
The end of file was reached."
I've gotten it twice, and it's a big pain in the butt. I have to go back
through and reset all of my preferences as well as recreate my accounts.
