I too have experienced the very same problem:
I think my attempts at repairs have increased my problems because I didn’t at first correctly identify the file with the problem. For me it was the Preferences file inside the identity folder of the identity with the error. No other identities had the problem. No preference file in the System folder seemed to be effected.
"The preferences file could not be opened. The end of file was reached."
My experience was that this error occurred without any other similar problems. The only other error my system (iMac DV 400 OS 9.04) has experienced has been mounting a digital camera via USB.
I have four of these Preferences files: 3 within identities folders and one in the general Office 2001 Identities folder. Each file is a different size.

I've gotten it twice, and it's a big pain in the butt. I have to go back
through and reset all of my preferences as well as recreate my accounts.
