Yes to the first part. The timeframe is more challenging.
But the technology does exist in a sufficiently advanced state to make a
5-10 year timeframe reasonable.
Personally, I think it's more a matter of demand versus fear of innovation.
No small company is willing to step up to the plate because they know that
they'll instantly be crushed if they're successful.
And IBM, Lucent, and Microsoft, all of whom have demonstrated bits and
pieces of the technology, aren't sufficiently innovation driven to bring the
product to market on their own. IMO.
Apple was our best hope...but they've seemingly written off most everything
that doesn't show a short-term return on investment. Reasonably so in light
of today's ridiculously short-sighted "Results are measured one quarter at a
time" mentality.
Oh well, perhaps someone in the Linux crowd will get bored.

I'm still waiting on my flying car...or at least commuting with a jetpack.
But I figure voice driven interfaces with contextual understanding are
probably going to be deployed first.
Just as well, can you imagine commuters with flying cars...on their cell
phones!
