I finally got it to work, in just that way. I knew I'd done it in the past;
even sent a message to the list about it. But, after my recent problems, I
could not find the message and could not remember how I'd done it!
In dribs and drabs, I'm working on a script (or script set) that will
"archive" folders to mailbox files, incrementally, by using a temporary
folder (select messages in a folder by date, create temp folder, move
messages there, archive temp folder, move messages back to original folder
or to Deleted Items, delete the temp folder). Then, "fix" the mailbox file
with my script for that purpose to make it have the correct mbx format.
One can then use Eudora (or an old version of Eudora Light, my preference
because the current Eudora, for some reason, seems to crash OMM) to read and
search the mailbox files, and even (if desired) reply to an archived
message. Or, quite easily, export a message or set of messages to a mailbox
file and import them back into Erage. (The mailbox files, being separate
files, are easier to back up than either the monolithic Entourage files, or
the equally huge FileMaker database files. And Eudora's ability to search
the mailboxes is superb.) It's something that I think might serve people
well instead of either a FileMaker or Hypercard archive solution.
To anyone who is interested in this: PLEASE don't write me asking for a
copy. Not yet! It will be at least weeks and possibly a couple of months
(with the holidays thrown in there) before I manage to find time to get this
worked out, although I have the part to select the messages and write them
out almost done. I want to be able to keep track of the last time folders
were archived, etc, so there is a lot more to do. I will announce it when
I've got it working to my satisfaction.
