Sorry to say that it is you who does not keep up...

Eudora has NEVER kept it's files in the prefs folder. Earlier versions used
to use a special Eudora Folder in the System folder, but even that changed
several versions ago.

Eudora handles aliases and moved files better than most applications and it
is very easy to have the mail folders and other files wherever you like. I
don't know what the 'limited compatibility' with OT is, Eudora was able to
connect & disconnect long before OE could. As for development, there have
been several Eudora releases between OE 5.0.2 & Entourage, most major
developments came out on Eudora to be copied (or, if you prefer,
'redeveloped') in the MS range (Spell checking, IMAP & Directory services to
name but two!) and there is continually a beta in test ready for the next
release, and usually the release after that as well.

Eudora can handle large volumes of mail without any slow-down (even as I
type this in Entourage, I am conscious that the screen cannot keep up with
the letters I am typing, and I'm only a four fingered typer!). My Eudora
mail folder has about 160,000 messages in it and it is a lot faster than OE
& Entourage without having the RAM or Disk footprint either.

I am quite well known on this list as a vociferous Eudora supporter, but I
don't normally speak out unless I see something like this that is just Plain
Wrong. I can live with anyone having a preference for OE or Entourage, but
please, base your preference on the facts!
