I would like to start a bit of a discussion about how people are using their
Custom Views in Entourage? I have few set up a few and use one of the
AppleScripts that was posted in this group to call up a window that lets me
choose which one I would like to see. All in all this system works pretty
well but I am still left wondering if I am using Custom Views to their
fullest potential?
In order to give myself a quick glance of events and tasks on the horizon I
have created two views that I have open all the time (in separate windows).
One called "Upcoming Tasks" and one called "Upcoming Events". I find that
these give me a better perspective of pending activities than the current
Calendar and Tasks features in Entourage which I feel are clunky and slow to
open and don't seem to display things the way I would prefer. The way my
brain works I would probably use the Calendar's "List View" if it showed my
Tasks in their category colours and if the List View would automatically
advance to the current day and not the beginning of the week so I don't need
to scroll every time I switch to it. I guess I would also love the ability
to globally switch off the notes that appears under each event in order to
compress the listing. I use Datebk4 on my Palm and it stores a bunch of it's
info and icon gibberish in the note field that I would prefer to not see in
the List View in Entourage.
My Custom View work arounds are as follows to:
"Upcoming Tasks" window
Item Types: Tasks
Criteria: If all criteria are met
Due date is less than 15 days from now
Priority is higher than lowest
Is incomplete
"Upcoming Events" window
Item Types: Calendar events
Criteria: If all criteria are met
Date is greater than 0 days from now
Date is less than 30 days from now
"Upcoming Tasks" is then sorted on the date column and and gives me a
listing of incomplete tasks that are due in the next two weeks. I find this
is an improvement on the stock Task list view that seems to list undated
(less important) tasks before the dates ones?
"Upcoming Events" is also sorted on the date column and give me a list of
all upcoming events in the next two weeks. I find this works like Calendar
List View could/should but with a few faults. Firstly it won't show events
on the current day (Date is greater than 0 days from now) and secondly it
won't show any repeating indefinably repeating events. I believe this to be
a limitation on the filtering options of the date ranges.
I guess ultimately my question is to ask how can I improve my "Upcoming
Events" view mentioned above and what other ways are people using their
Custom Views in Entourage?
