Whereas I, on the other hand, am somewhat excited by it.
It actually has the potential to be the operating system that I've been
looking for for the last, oh, 20 years.
It might not be it...but it's the only thing on the horizon that has the
potential.

Everyone running a machine that originally came with a G3 processor is
capable of running the MacOS X. That's a lot of the machines already out
there.
I think we'll see a spike in Apple's sales figures when MacOS X comes
available. There are a lot of people putting off hardware purchases until
such time as X ships on the box.
If Apple finishes the job correctly, it'll mostly be transparent to the
consumer. So, it's true that "masses" of people won't rush out and buy it.
But corporations, technical people, and early adopters will "rush". ;-)

AppleWorks has been lost since before the days of ClarisWorks. Mostly
because of Apple's on-again/off-again/on-again/off-again complete and total
lack of management or vision.
If nothing else, AppleWorks/ClarisWorks kept Microsoft honest and forced
them to have a $99 product in the same space.
When was Microsoft Works last updated on the Macintosh? Under Windows,
where there remains competition for this market segment, I note, among other
products, "Microsoft Works Suite 2001 DVD"...

Someday, Microsoft will get Windows right. They do get closer and closer
with each major revision. Whistler has a lot of potential.
But the currently shipping versions: 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000; they're still
mostly crap. IMHO.
