This problem has been widely reported in various forms with OS9.1 and 
a similar (maybe the same) problem surfaced with the last ATI driver 
update for the Rage128/Radeon.

Try searching the MacFixIt forums or you could try the following (or 
the equivalent for the Sony monitor) which I saw on the Accelerate 
Your Mac website
