I suppose the first question is "Do you have the Control Strip software?"
Control Panels-Control Strip would be the place to look. If you've got it,
Show it. ;-)
One of the "standard" items in the Control Strip is a popup including the
available resolutions and an "Open Monitors Control Panel" shortcut.
Simply clicking on it will normally show you the "Recommended" resolutions.
Control-clicking will normally show you "All" available resolutions.
That having been said. I've no clue as to whether or not the Control Strip
is installed by default on an iMac. But I think it is.
