Actually, it's just used by OE and its Palm Conduit, not Excel.

If you double click an RFC 822 message, it will open it in a window. If you
double click an mbox file, it'll ask if you want to import it. You can also
drag either file type in.
And, on the other thread, Entourage vCard files are stored as 2-byte
Unicode.
