I think that is mis-information, Martin. I use Word with spell checking
enabled (and SpellCatcher as well!), and I don't see any slow-down in
typing.

Furthermore, the original question was about sluggish <scrolling> using a
scroll wheel on a mouse, which has nothing whatsoever to do with spell
checking.

Sounds like you (Scott) have done all the right things. I'd suspect
something conflicting with the USB extensions. When you say you've turned
off everything except the mouse extensions, are you sure all other USB
extensions were off? Have you tried the shareware USB Overdrive? (I tried it
once with my Intellimouse and it worked, but eventually the MS extensions
worked just as well.)

Have you also run Disk First Aid? Could there be some kind of disk problem
slowing things?

How do you have memory set for Word? Have you tried increasing it? Is
virtual memory on or off?

These are all just shots in the dark...
