I used version 2 on my SE to write a thesis or 2 back in 1987! In fact the
SE is still around and has the old version running...
I couldn't miss Word in my current job, although it's forced me to change my
way of way of working.
Amongst other things, I write quality manuals for small to very big and
complex companies. These manuals can be very complex and Word just can't
handle large documents (sooner or later they get corrupted).
Hyperlinks is what saved my but. Nowadays I just chop it all up into
separate documents (15 pages max) and link it all together using hyperlinks.
Makes online reading (which is "the thing" now) even easier.
Still spend many days cursing Word and Office in general because it crashed
again on too complex a situation though...
