I think you are likely to be disappointed here. Apparently Word uses its own
text handling routines, rather than the native MacOS support. This means
that many of the capabilities that you would expect to be able to use are
not available in Word.

This is not really surprising, as Windows has much less text and
international text  support, and so application developers must write most
of the text support themselves - leading to shortcuts like assuming one byte
per character, or incorrect selections. Certainly support for right to left
languages is low on the list...
