Title: Re: SR-1 updater logic could be improved
I think the microsoft prefix is there for copyright issues.

This has probably already been covered, but I thought I would point out some quick tips for those updating to SR-1:

(1) If you’ve changed the names of any files in the Office 2001 folder, change them back to their original names before running the updater or they won’t be updated.

(2) If you’ve modified any Office apps in any way (e.g., changing the icons), replace the apps with fresh ones from the CD before updating.

Additional notes:

In my case, I find the placement of the word “Microsoft” in front of the individual app file names to be redundant. (I think I can remember who wrote the applications!
J )  So I routinely remove these prefixes on all the app file names, resulting in “Word,” “Excel,” “Entourage,” and “PowerPoint.” In my case, the updater simply ignored the renamed apps while it updated all the other common components, providing the user with no indication that it couldn’t find any Office applications! In other words, it seems as if the update went ahead smoothly, when in reality none of the four apps were updated. The non-updated Entourage had no apparent problems working with the updated Office components, but the similarly non-updated versions of Excel and Word kaboomed at launch. I didn’t bother trying to launch PowerPoint.

Suggestions to Office Development Team for future updates:

  1. Please provide at least minimal error checking so that the user is notified if the updater can’t find any Office applications.
  2. While one can’t expect the identifier to guess every possible filename, it could be made to at least look for the four filenames mentioned above (i.e., the original names minus the “Microsoft” prefix.)
  3. Let users know in the Read Me (which I did read) that the apps won’t be updated if custom icons are used.

Regarding the icon issue, there are a number of great 32-bit replacement icons for Word/Excel/PowerPoint, and I use some of these in place of the icons that came with Office 2001. This changes one or more resources, however, which causes the update to choke on these apps.

Hope this helps those who haven’t updated yet.

Justin
