Adam,
I have three reasons why I subscribe to, and burst digests:
1) Habit. Many of my digests I first subscribed to in my AOL days. It was
(and may still be) a long distant phone call to AOL and digests were quicker
to download than individual messages. (Memory has AOL pausing between
messages.) -- I burst these messages to make them smaller and easier to
read. (Especially when a thread continually repeats all the previous
messages in that thread.) And to group these messages into threads. Yes, for
me, MLM does group burst digests into threads.
2) Nuisance. Many of the digests I still subscribe to are specialty lists
that I don't track all that close. I don't need to be constantly interrupted
by their message dribbling in and prefer the slower pace of a digest. --
Like this list, if I was receiving this list on my machine at work I would
subscribe to the digest. Interesting as the discussions can be, they are not
work and would get in the way of what I need to do there. Now, at home it is
another story. At times I get a kick out of following different discussions.
3) Message Count. My ISP gets upset if I have too many messages in my mail
box. (Size does not appear to be the issue.) It doesn't take long for a list
like this one to exceed my ISPs' limit. And whenever I get back from a trip
of a couple of weeks or so I usually have a message from my ISP complaining.
I am thinking about going back to the digest in order to cut down on my
message count.
