I think you're right, Dan. Option 2 is actually somewhat slower -- maybe
25% -- than "Mark All as Read" when all of the messages are unread. But, if
you're just "catching up" the latest few dozen messages in a folder that has
a few thousand items, Option 2 is 10x faster or more.

It looks like "Mark All as Read" goes and marks each message as read,
whether it is already marked as read or not. The method in #2 (possibly
with Allen's tweak for threaded view -- which I never use) only affects the
messages that need to be changed.

In any event, "Mark All as Read" is surprisingly slow -- 13 seconds on a
folder of only 562 items, on a 500MHz G4 laptop! Selecting all the messages
in the mailbox and choosing "Mark as Read" or "Mark as Unread" are worse --
17 seconds on the same messages.

Anyway, hopefully this is a helpful tip for folks who occasionally do what I
do, which is to just want to catch up a few dozen messages out of that big
folder.

Speaking of Threaded view -- I'm curious as to whether people use this a
lot. I never do, because I found its utility to be greatly diminished by
the apparent absence of any way to sort the threads, except the default: by
subject. I would like to be able to use threaded view, but sort by ... say
... received date, which would sort the threads with the
most-recently-received messages to the top.
