Well, the problem is fixed, with a great deal of help from David Cortright
and Paul Berkowitz. It's an old Erage problem that I should have remembered
and known better. I'll restate it here for emphasis:

DON'T EDIT A SINGLE INSTANCE OF A RECURRING EVENT!!!!!

You're playing with fire if you do. You may still be able to synch for a
while--meanwhile you're generating a bunch of duplicate entries that you're
not even aware of. Then one day--bang! You'll freeze up, and the cleanup and
re-creation will be very painful and time-consuming.

I'm really hoping that the team is working aggressively on fixing the
recurring events problems in Erage. Usage is inconvenient at best, and
dangerous even under the most intuitive and obvious procedures.

Thanks to the list, and especially David and Paul, for saving what could
have been days of recovery time. Even with a full backup, this was not an
easy problem to recover from.
