Seems to be the full kit 'n kaboodle to me. The only difference is the
expectation of Office 2001 at the time of first installation.

I didn't have Office 2001 application on my disk at all. I had removed it
when I reformatted my disk to install OS X (backing up all my documents and
mail, of course). Then I installed Office v.X and later temporarily
installed Entourage 2001 just so I could import everything to Entourage X
and then I dumped 2001 again (now I have to put it back in order to sync my
Visor, oh well)

Here's the process:

Insert Office v.X CD
Copy Office folder to hard drive
Open one of the v.X applications from the hard drive (it doesn't matter
which one)
The installer will ask for your personal information and CD install key
(which hopefully by now will work with the one you order)
Then it will ask for you to navigate your disk to an Office 2001 folder. If
you have Office 2001 on your disk, go to that one. Otherwise, put in the
Office 2001 CD and navigate to the folder that's on the CD.
Office v.X will tell you that your copy is validated and complete the
startup

After that one time process, I don't think Office v.X cares whether or not
Office 2001 is on your drive or even if you still have it. You can dump it
or do whatever you want with it.

No. See above. Just be sure that you save your Office 2001 CD.

See above. Same answer.

In order to qualify for the upgrade, you have to *own* an Office 2001 CD.
You don't have to have it on your computer.
