After you install, you can delete the 2001 apps if you want. Also, if for any reason you need to temporarily <use> the 2001 apps, you can still run them, or the Office v. X ones, on the same machine, just not at the same time. If you have the X version launched and try to launch Word 2001, for example, it will start, detect the other version of Word, and switch you there. Same in reverse; if 2001 version is launched you can't launch the X version.
