A drag-and-drop from the upgrade CD should (operative word being 'should') work fine, so long as you restore your ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft folder from a backup copy. This folder contains a file named Office X Registration Cache, among other files, which I [presume] contain your registration data. Perhaps someone who has tried this can comment further.
